"David really knows what it's like; he really cares, and he puts on a good show, too." - Linda, age 72, with diabetes and arthritis

"When I came to this class, I felt like there wasn't much I could do for myself. I left with a bunch of new ideas, and I believe I can carry them out!" - Mary, age 44, with lupus

Format
"The Art of Getting Well" is given in one, two, four, and six-hour versions. Instructional techniques include lecture, discussions, guided imagery, group and individual exercises. The 5 steps to self-care:

  1. Get help
  2. Slow down
  3. Make a change
  4. Take charge
  5. Value yourself and your body.

Some barriers to self-care

  • Shortage of reasons to live ("Why would I want to get well?)
  • Low self-esteem ("I'm not worth the time and effort.")
  • Lack of support ("I don't know anyone/I hate to ask.")
  • Fear of change ("I couldn't do that. It's too hard.")
  • Lack of hope ("It won't work. Nothing ever does.")
